Dog Earwax Color Chart

Just like humans, dogs produce earwax to protect their ears from dirt, pollen and debris.

Also referred to as cerumen, earwax contains antibacterial properties that help ears stay clean and healthy.

It’s important to check your dog’s ears at least once a week and monitor:

  1. The color of their earwax
  2. Any foul smells or discharge
  3. Skin inflammation and rashes

YELLOW

Yellow Earwax

A pale yellow color indicates normal, healthy earwax.

LIGHT BROWN

Light Brown Earwax

A common color of earwax found in dogs with good health.

 

DARK BROWN

Dark Brown Earwax

The color of discharge often associated with yeast infections.

DARK GREEN

Dark Green Earwax

Bacterial infections typically accompanied by a foul smell.

DARK RED

Dark Red Earwax

Bloody earwax is a sign of a health issue – ruptured eardrums & infections

BLACK

Black Earwax

Grey to black shades indicate infections, dirt and debris.
